For a long time, I approached websites as collections of individual pages. Each page had its own purpose, its own layout, and its own content. Eventually I realised that visitors don’t experience websites one page at a time—they experience them as a continuous journey.

Early in my design journey, I believed improvement came from adding more. More sections, more interactions, more visual elements. Each new idea felt like progress. Over time, I realised that the opposite was often true. The projects that felt the strongest weren’t the busiest—they were the most focused.

Every year introduces a new collection of visual trends. Some disappear within months, while others become so widespread that they begin to define an era of digital design. It’s easy to follow those movements, especially when they seem to promise relevance or originality. The challenge is remembering that trends are temporary, while the purpose of design is not.

When people talk about memorable websites, they often point to bold visuals or impressive animations. Those moments certainly have their place, but they rarely define an experience on their own. More often, it’s the quieter details that stay with us—the rhythm of the typography, the way content is introduced, or the subtle motion that helps us understand where to look next.

Simplicity is often mistaken for the absence of effort. A clean interface, a restrained color palette, or a layout with generous whitespace can appear effortless at first glance. In reality, simplicity is usually the result of countless decisions, revisions, and compromises. Every element that remains has earned its place, while everything unnecessary has been carefully removed.
